Big Five III Buffalo Gold Set

The set includes two gold coins, each weighing 1/4 troy ounce, struck in Au .9999 fine gold. The Proof standard combines a mirror-like background with frosted relief, strikingly highlighting the details of the design. Each coin has a diameter of 22 mm, while the total face value of the set is 100 Rand. The coins are housed in a special Doublecap twin capsule and an elegant mint presentation case.

The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of the most recognizable inhabitants of the African savannah. Its massive build, distinctive horns, and impressive strength make it an important symbol of Africa’s wildlife and an integral part of the legendary Big Five.

Obverse and reverse of the coins

The obverse features a full-body image of an adult African buffalo. The design is complemented by the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, “BIG FIVE 2026”, and the coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa.

The reverse depicts the characteristic composition of two halves of a buffalo’s head. Placing both coins side by side in the Doublecap capsule creates a complete portrait of the animal, one of the most recognizable motifs of the Big Five series.
