Krugerrand Gold Coin 1 oz Gold 2017 (50th Anniversary) is a special edition of one of the world’s most recognizable bullion coins. This issue was released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand, whose history began in 1967. The coin’s commemorative nature is highlighted by a special anniversary mark, and the mintage was limited to 100,000 pieces.

A South African icon of the gold market

The coin contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold, or 31.1035 g of precious metal. The Krugerrand is struck in 916.7 fine gold, equivalent to 22 karats, with an addition of copper to enhance the coin’s resistance to damage. It is produced by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery. The Krugerrand remains legal tender in the Republic of South Africa, although it does not bear a face value.

Coin design

Obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, president of the former South African Republic. The image is surrounded by inscriptions referring to the Republic of South Africa in both Afrikaans and English.

Reverse depicts a springbok – an antelope that is one of South Africa’s national symbols. The classic design was created by Coert Steynberg. The composition is completed by the year of issue, the gold content marking, and the 50th anniversary privy mark.
