Gold Coin Austria 8 Gulden 1892 RESTRIKE
1892 Austrian 8 Gulden Gold Coin – Restrike is a modern reissue of a historic coin issued by the Austrian Mint. It is an official restrike, faithfully reproducing the design of the 1892 gold 8 gulden coin—the last year the gulden functioned as the currency of Austria-Hungary before being replaced by the crown.
The gulden was a currency used in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century and formed part of a monetary system associated with the Latin Monetary Union. Although Austria signed a preliminary agreement with the member states of the union, it ultimately did not become a full member. Nevertheless, gold coins in the denominations of 4 and 8 gulden are now among the most recognizable historic issues of Austrian minting.
The coin was struck in Au 900 fine gold. It contains 5.81 g of pure gold, has a total weight of 6.45 g, and a diameter of 21 mm. The offered specimen is an official restrike, retaining the historic 1892 date displayed on the coin.
Obverse features a bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from 1848 to 1916. The design is complemented by his titulature.
Reverse shows the 8 Gulden denomination and the Austrian double-headed imperial eagle. The visible “1892” date refers to the final year of issue for the historic gulden coins before they were replaced by the crown, emphasizing the historical character of this modern restrike.
