Gold Coin Austria 4 Gulden 1892 RESTRIKE
Gold Coin 4 Austrian Gulden 1892 – Restrike is a modern reissue of a historic coin minted by the Austrian Mint. It is an official restrike, faithfully reproducing the design of the 1892 gold 4-gulden coin – the last year the gulden functioned as the currency of Austria-Hungary before being replaced by the crown.
The gulden was a currency used in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century and formed part of a monetary system associated with the Latin Monetary Union. Although Austria signed a preliminary agreement with the states belonging to the union, it ultimately did not become a full member. Nevertheless, the gold coins with denominations of 4 and 8 gulden are today among the most recognizable historic issues of Austrian coinage.
The coin was struck in Au 900 fine gold. It contains 2.90 g of pure gold, has a total weight of 3.23 g, and a diameter of 19 mm. The offered piece is an official restrike, preserving the historic date 1892 shown on the coin.
Obverse features a bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who reigned over the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from 1848 to 1916. The design is complemented by his titulature.
Reverse depicts the denomination of 4 gulden and the Austrian double-headed imperial eagle. The visible date “1892” refers to the final year of issue of the historic gulden coins before they were replaced by the crown, emphasizing the historic character of this modern restrike.
