Duchess of Hamilton £2 Copper-Nickel 2026
The Duchess of Hamilton £2 Cupro-Nickel 2026 Coin is a commemorative issue prepared by The Royal Mint, honoring one of the most recognizable locomotives in the history of British railways.
Duchess of Hamilton was built in 1938 at the Crewe Works for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). The locomotive was designed to operate the most prestigious express services between London and Glasgow. Thanks to its streamlined design and distinctive Art Deco-style lining, it became a symbol of the golden age of British railways, combining speed, modernity, and elegance.
The coin was struck in cupro-nickel, has a weight of 12.00 g and a diameter of 28.40 mm. The numismatic piece has a face value of 2 pounds sterling and was produced in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, valued by collectors for its sharp details and careful finish.
The obverse features the official effigy of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, along with the denomination.
The reverse, designed by Gary Breeze, depicts the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive in a dynamic side profile. The design captures the machine’s distinctive silhouette, emphasizing its speed, elegance, and importance in the history of British railways.
This is the first official British coin dedicated to the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive. The issue is a tribute to one of the best-known achievements of British railway engineering and recalls an era when the railway was a symbol of technological progress and modernity.
