Ragnar Lodbrok, who likely lived in the 9th century, was known as a king of the Vikings, a traveler, and a warrior who raided the coasts of England and France. The nickname “Lodbrok” (“fur trousers”) was said to come from clothing that protected him from snake bites. According to legend, he was captured by King Ælla and executed in a snake pit, which prompted his sons to swear vengeance.

One of them was Ivar the Boneless, leader of the Great Heathen Army. He may have owed his name to a bone disease or paralysis; nevertheless, despite physical limitations he was regarded as a brilliant strategist who led one of the largest invasions of England. His brother, Björn Ironside, in turn became famous as a fearless warrior, leading expeditions to the territories of France, Spain, North Africa, and Italy.
