Silver coin, the second in the successful Predator series minted by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). The Canadian lynx, a brave hunter with beautiful, distinctive features. An excellent climber and swimmer, the lynx is also a gifted hunter who adapts easily to the changing seasons, an admirable trait that makes it one of Canada's iconic species.The Royal Canadian Mint was officially opened in 1908 by Governor General Earl Grey, minting the first fifty-cent coin produced on Canadian soil. Silver is mainly used as a precious metal. Sterling silver alloyed with copper is used for jewellery, crockery and cutlery. It is also used in the production of medals. High-end musical instruments, such as flutes, are made from this alloy. Silver is a very malleable and forgeable (slightly harder than gold) monovalent group 11 metal, with a lustrous sheen that can be easily polished.The obverse features the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination ($5).
