The obverse shows the likeness of King Charles III of the United Kingdom and the denomination and year, as designed by Martin Jennings.
The Rewers of the coin depict Tolkien's monogram. On the reverse are the inscriptions "WRITER POET SCHOLAR", "1892 JRR TOLKIEN 1973". The reverse was designed by David Lawrence.
