Canada: Northern Lights in the Moonlight 2 oz Silver 2016 Glow-in-the-Dark Proof
Canada: Northern Lights in the Moonlight 2 oz Silver 2016 Proof is an exceptional collector coin that spectacularly captures one of nature’s most magical phenomena—the aurora borealis illuminating Canada’s Arctic sky. This issue combines masterful engraving, full colorization, and advanced glow-in-the-dark technology, creating a highly evocative and memorable composition.
In the far north of Canada, where silence and the stark beauty of the landscape create an almost mystical atmosphere, the aurora borealis has inspired awe and reverence for centuries. This phenomenon arises from collisions of charged particles emitted by the Sun with atoms in Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in spectacular waves of light in shades of green, yellow, red, and orange. The coin evocatively captures this extraordinary natural spectacle, enriched by the motif of wolves, whose prolonged howls enhance the impression of a wild, primordial scene.
The piece was struck in Proof standard from 2 ounces of .9999 fine silver and carries a face value of 30 Canadian dollars. The mintage is strictly limited to 4,000 pieces worldwide, each accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity. A reeded edge and large diameter made it possible to render the landscape and light effects with exceptional detail.
This is the second coin in a series combining colorization, engraving, and a glow-in-the-dark effect. To fully experience the remarkable visual effect, expose the coin to a light source for about 30–60 seconds, then move it to a dark environment. The aurora will emit a subtle, multicolored glow, visible even through the protective capsule.
The obverse features the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, together with the issuing country’s name, face value, and other mandatory inscriptions characteristic of Royal Canadian Mint issues.
The reverse, designed by acclaimed Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi, depicts the winter landscape of Auyuittuq National Park in Nunavut. Against the backdrop of the monumental granite walls of Thor Peak stand two Baffin Island wolves, lifting their muzzles to the sky in an expressive howl. Above them stretches the multicolored aurora, which, thanks to the applied glow-in-the-dark technology, literally comes to life after dark.
