Canada: Commemorating Black History - Hogan's Alley $20 Silver 2025 Proof Coin
Canada: Commemorating Black History - Amber Valley $20 Silver 2024 Proof is the seventh coin in the annual series honoring the contributions of Black Canadians to the history of Canada. It pays tribute to Hogan’s Alley – the first Black community in Vancouver, symbolizing community, entrepreneurship, and civil activism. The coin, issued in 2025, commemorates both the achievements of this community and its painful loss in the 1960s, when, due to urban renewal projects, the community was displaced, and Hogan’s Alley was razed to the ground. It serves as a symbolic reminder of the lasting influence the residents of this neighborhood had on the culture, art, politics, and economy of Canada.
The coin is struck from silver with a fineness of Ag.9999, weighing 31.39 grams and with a diameter of 38 mm, in proof standard. Each piece comes with certified individual packaging. The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces. Additionally, this extraordinary coin was produced by The Royal Canadian Mint. The coin is backed by a guarantee from the Government of Canada regarding its legality, silver purity, and metal origin, and it is also legal tender in the issuing country.
Obverse features a portrait of King Charles III, along with information about the year and denomination of the coin, designed by Steven Rosati.
Reverse depicts a scene inspired by Hogan’s Alley, capturing the everyday life and unique character of this dynamic community, with the inscription "CANADA." The reverse design was created by Kwame Delfish.
