Canada: Commemorating Black History – Adinkra Symbols, 1 oz Silver, 2026, Proof
Canada: Commemorating Black History – Adinkra Symbols is an exceptional collectible coin struck from 1 oz of pure 9999 silver, issued in 2026 by the Royal Canadian Mint. This release marks the eighth numismatic issue in the prestigious annual “Commemorating Black History” series and makes history as the first Canadian coin to feature Adinkra symbols.
Adinkra symbols originate from the culture of the Akan people of Ghana and have for centuries conveyed moral values, ancestral wisdom, and principles of social life. For many Black Canadians, particularly those with West African roots, they represent a living connection to pre-colonial heritage. Themes such as respect, peace, and community resonate strongly with stories of migration, resilience, and the preservation of identity.
The coin was produced in Proof quality, with exceptional detail and a mirror-like background. The set includes a special information card explaining the meaning of each symbol featured on the reverse. A limited mintage of just 5,000 pieces makes this issue highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
The coin is presented in an elegant black clamshell case with a matching protective outer box.
The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III by Steven Rosati, surrounded by a subtle maple leaf pattern. It also bears the face value of 20 Canadian dollars and the year of issue.
The reverse displays a composition of Adinkra symbols, including motifs representing respect, unity, and reconciliation. The design by Kwame Delfish blends African symbolism with modern aesthetics, highlighting shared values and the universal language of human experience.
