Buffalo Wings 1 ounce of copper
Buffalo Wings 1 Ounce Copper is a medal inspired by one of the most famous designs in the history of American coinage—the 1913 Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser. This motif, an icon of the first half of the 20th century, returns here in a striking form as a 1‑ounce round made of .999 fine copper. It is a proposal that will appeal both to collectors who appreciate classic design and to enthusiasts of American numismatic history.
Fraser’s design grew out of his personal experiences and observations of life in the American Midwest. The Buffalo Nickel, issued from 1913 to 1938, quickly became one of the most iconic U.S. circulation coins. In the copper version it gains a new face—thanks to the deep relief and careful rendering of details, one can fully appreciate the craftsmanship of the original, including the faithful depiction of the famous bison Black Diamond from the New York zoo.
Obverse: Depicts a massive bison standing on a characteristic earthen mound, in keeping with Fraser’s original design. Around the rim are the inscriptions “.999 FINE COPPER” at the top and “ONE OUNCE” at the bottom. The meticulously rendered fur and silhouette of the animal emphasize the original’s naturalistic style.
Reverse: Features a stylized version of the American heraldic shield with three stars, flanked by outspread eagle wings. Above the shield the U.S. flag waves, and below appears the inscription “USA.” The composition is executed in an elegant, patriotic style, forming a harmonious complement to the classic obverse.
