Britannia is a personification of Britain in the ancient (classical) style. The model for later representations of this type was the Roman bronze coin issues from the reigns of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius. To commemorate their achievements in Britannia (e.g. the construction of Hadrian's Bulwark, Antoninus' Bulwark) or in relation to this province of the empire, the reverses of debased coins featured an allegory in the form of a personification of the province of Britannia depicted as a seated female figure leaning against a circular shield and wielding a spear or military sign (vexillum). On English coins (halfpenny and farthing) this depiction was introduced in the 17th century during the reign of Charles II, with the depiction of the figure and its attributes indicating that it must have been based on a Roman original. Slightly modified over time, the allegory of Britain took on particular significance in Victorian times and during both world wars, retaining it until at least the 1950s, when it played an important role in the propaganda of the British Empire." The reverse on each edition of the coin remains the same. It depicts the traditional figure of Britannia, armed with a trident and a shield.
