It is also worth mentioning that the Britannia is the first European investment coin to be introduced into circulation, in 1987.The first copies, which were produced between 1987 and 2012, were minted from 22-karat gold with an admixture of other metals. From 1987 to 1989, Britannas were strengthened with a small admixture of copper, which made the coins more scratch-resistant and also made them stand out for their peculiar colour. From 1989 to 2012, copper was replaced by silver, which, as with copper, was designed to strengthen the coin and give it a unique colour.
