Barbados: Captains of Fortune – Oxford 2 oz Silver 2024 High Relief Antiqued Coin
Barbados: Captains of Fortune – Oxford 2 oz Silver 2024 High Relief Antiqued Coin is a collector coin inspired by the Golden Age of piracy in the Caribbean. The issue commemorates the legendary ship “Oxford,” commanded by Captain Henry Morgan—one of the most famous privateers of the 17th century.
The coin is struck from 2 ounces of .999 fine silver and has a diameter of 45 mm. Produced in high relief with an antiqued (oxidized) finish, it offers pronounced depth of detail and a dramatic contrast of light and shadow. The coin weighs 62.2 g and features a smooth edge.
The “Oxford” was not only a seagoing vessel but a true maritime fortress. Renowned for its speed and firepower, its role in Morgan’s daring 1671 attack on Panama went down in history. The coin’s design captures the atmosphere of naval battles and the relentless determination of the era’s captains.
The coin was issued in 2024 as legal tender of Barbados with a face value of 5 dollars. A limited mintage of 1,500 pieces underscores its collectible character. Each piece is delivered in a capsule, with a box and a Certificate of Authenticity.
Obverse shows the Barbados coat of arms on the left, while at the center there is a skull wearing a pirate hat with an eye patch. It also includes the face value, year of issue, and information on weight and silver purity.
Reverse depicts the ship “Oxford” on a rough sea, with other vessels in the background. In the foreground stands Captain Henry Morgan. The design is completed by the inscription “OXFORD.”
