The currency presents the whale - the Humpback whale. The animals have the longest annual migration of all mammals. They travel from the Antarctic Peninsula south of Cape Horn, across the equator to Colombia and even to Mexico. The aforementioned coin was produced from pure Au.9999 gold, weighing one troy ounce and measuring 38.74 mm in diameter.

The Royal Australian Mint is responsible for the limited mintage of 250 pieces of the coin. Furthermore, the gold coin is guaranteed by the Australian Government and is legal tender in the issuer's country. The product is housed in an original, certified case.

The obverse shows the image of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the inscription "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" along with information on the date of issue of the coin and the face value. The designer of the obverse was J. Clark.

Rewers show a humpback whale leaping out of the water and two small whales clinging to an adult. In addition, the reverse bears the inscription 'HUMBPACK WHALE' and information on weight, purity of bullion.
