The American Bison is the first US Mint coin struck in 24-karat gold. It is a relatively young product, as it was first minted in 2006, but like all United States Mint coins it has quickly achieved popularity with investors around the world. Interestingly, in addition to the investment version, collector's editions (American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin) are also sold, which include certificates of authenticity issued by the mint. The Mint was established as a response to the unstable monetary rates occurring at the time - people realised the importance of stability in circulation. Today, the mint is one of the most prestigious in the world. In the recent period, the production varies between 4 and 10 billion coins per year, which makes the coins produced at this mint already known all over the world. The United States Mint operates in six cities across the country: the headquarters is in Washington DC, the treasury is in Fort Knox, and production centres are in Philadelphia, West Point, Denver and San Francisco. The obverse depicts an Indian, which Fraser said was created as a blend of the characteristics of three chiefs of different American Indian tribes - Big Tree, Steel Tail and Two Moons. The obverse also depicts the motto 'Freedom ' in the upper right corner, the year of issue at the bottom left, and below that the letter F from Fraser's name.On the reverse, a Bison (often referred to as a buffalo) stands atop the mound. Most people believe that the animal depicted on the reverse is a buffalo named Black Diamond, who lived at New York Central Park Zoo in 1910. On the reverse we can also see the American motto "In God We Trust" and "E pluribus unum" (Latin for Out of Many One), the date of production and the coin's denomination ($50).
