African Meerkat 1 oz Silver 2016
Brass - an alloy of copper and zinc, containing up to 10-45% zinc. It may contain additions of other metals such as lead, aluminium, tin, manganese, iron, chromium and silicon. It melts at temperatures below 1000 °C (depending on the grade). Above 907 °C, the main alloying element of brass, i.e. zinc, begins to evaporate causing the formation of scale. Brass has an orange-yellow colour, with lower zinc contents approaching the natural colour of copper. The alloy is corrosion resistant, ductile, easy to machine. It has good casting properties. In some applications its disadvantage is its relatively high density (8.4-8.7 g/cm³). Brass is used to manufacture fittings, seawater-resistant fittings such as ship propellers, as well as ammunition, building hardware, particularly handles. Also, machine components in the engineering, automotive, electrical, marine, precision and chemical industries. An important application of brass is in the manufacture of musical instruments. It is stronger than bronze because it contains zinc which gives it strength and therefore hardness[2]. It is very useful for cold forming, e.g. in the production of ammunition shells. In addition, brass is used to make coins, medals, candlesticks, cups, padlocks, mortars, monuments, decorative elements (buckles, handles) and many other small parts and products such as weights, fittings, picture frames, etc. Brass is supplied in the form of bars for casting or rods, wires, sheets, strips and tubes."
