The 500 Years of the Crown £5 Silver 2026 Proof Coin is a collector’s issue produced by The Royal Mint, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the introduction into circulation of one of the most recognizable coins in the history of British coinage – the Crown.

The first Crown coin was issued in August 1526 during the reign of Henry VIII. Its design was inspired by the French gold coin ecu au soleil, known as the “crown of the sun.” Initially referred to as the “Crown of the Rose,” it later became associated with the distinctive motif of a double-crowned rose, which secured its place in the history of British numismatics.

Over the next five centuries, the Crown remained an important element of the British monetary system, becoming the bearer of many outstanding minting designs. Since 1935, it has served primarily as a commemorative coin, marking important historical, cultural, and royal events.

The coin was struck in .925 fine silver, with a weight of 28.28 g and a diameter of 38.61 mm. The numismatic piece has a face value of 5 pounds sterling and was produced in the highest minting standard, Proof, distinguished by a mirror-like background and frosted relief details.

The obverse, designed by Martin Jennings, features the official effigy of King Charles III. The design is enhanced by a decorative border containing five roses symbolizing five centuries of the Crown coin’s history.

The reverse, designed by Timothy Noad, celebrates the 500-year history of the Crown as one of the most important coins in the history of Great Britain, referring to its rich heritage and significance in the British minting tradition.

The coin was struck by The Royal Mint – the same mint that issued the first Crown coin in 1526. This issue is a unique tribute to five centuries of British minting history and to one of the most prestigious denominations in its history.
