350 Years of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich £2 Gold-plated Silver 2025 Proof Piedfort
The £2 Royal Observatory Greenwich 2025 commemorative coin is a unique piece marking the 350th anniversary of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich – an institution that played a key role in advancing navigation and timekeeping. Founded by King Charles II in 1675, the observatory became the site of groundbreaking discoveries, including the solution to the problem of longitude.
The coin is struck from fine silver (Ag 925) and coated with a layer of pure gold. It weighs 24 grams and has a diameter of 28.4 mm. Produced to Proof Piedfort, it is limited to just 650 pieces. The reverse was designed by Henry Gray, and the obverse by Martin Jennings.
Obverse features the portrait of King Charles III and the inscription “CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 2 POUNDS • 2025”.
Reverse presents a set of symbols associated with the observatory’s history: the Shepherd Gate Clock, the North Star (Polaris), and various scientific instruments that contributed to major breakthroughs in astronomy and navigation. The coin’s edge bears the inscription: “∙ PERFECTING THE ART OF NAVIGATION”.
