"African elephant (Loxodonta africana) - a species of mammal in the elephant family, the largest modern land animal. Previously recognised as a single species along with the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis). A pack animal, it inhabits the African savannah, forests and steppes from the southern edge of the Sahara to Namibia, northern Botswana and the northern part of Africa. Used as fighting animals in ancient times. African elephants are considered to be animals endowed with high intelligence. An elephant's brain weighs about 6,000 g (four times that of a human). The average lifespan of an elephant is about 65-70 years in the wild and up to 80 years in captivity. Cases of elephants reaching over 80 years have been recorded. The oldest fossils of African elephants date back to the middle Pliocene. Although the African elephant is actually a savannah animal, it can adapt to other conditions, allowing it to live in areas south of the Sahara. However, it only settles where there are sources of drinking water and places to bathe. The largest recorded elephant punch measured 3.1m and weighed almost 105kg."
