200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Silver Proof
To mark the 200th anniversary of the first journey of the Locomotion No. 1, The Royal Mint presents the exceptional 200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Proof coin, commemorating the beginning of a transport revolution. On 27 September 1825, between Shildon and Stockton in northern England, the steam locomotive Locomotion No. 1, operated by engineer George Stephenson, transported 600 passengers and 36 wagons. This event, considered the first passenger train journey in history, marked the start of modern railway transport and became a milestone in the development of modern society. The coin is part of the "Railway 200" celebrations, which honour two centuries of railways transforming societies, economies, and cultures worldwide. Struck from gold-plated silver with a total weight of 12 g. Obverse of the coin features a portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, along with the coin’s denomination and year of issue – 2025. The royal effigy pays tribute to the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Reverse depicts the steam locomotive Locomotion No. 1, symbolising the dawn of the modern railway era. The coin’s edge bears the inscription “ACTIVE LOCOMOTION NO 1”, honouring this revolutionary machine.
