200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Gold Proof
To mark the 200th anniversary of the first journey of the Locomotion No. 1 locomotive, The Royal Mint presents the exceptional "200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Proof" coin, commemorating the beginning of the transportation revolution. On September 27th, 1825, on the tracks between Shildon and Stockton in northern England, the steam-powered Locomotion No. 1, led by engineer George Stephenson, carried 600 passengers and 36 wagons. This historic event is recognized as the first public steam-powered passenger transport, marking the start of a new era in transportation history. This coin is part of the "Railway 200" celebrations commemorating the 200th anniversary of modern railways, which have significantly influenced the development of societies, economies, and cultures worldwide. It is minted from two types of gold: yellow and red gold. The total weight of the coin is 15.98g. Obverse of the coin features the likeness of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, along with the denomination and year of issue – 2025. The image of the King on the obverse serves as a tribute to the current head of the British monarchy. Reverse of the coin features the Locomotion No. 1 steam locomotive, symbolizing the dawn of the modern railway era. The edge inscription reads “ACTIVE LOCOMOTION NO 1,” honoring this revolutionary machine. Each coin is carefully packaged in an elegant presentation box and is accompanied by a guarantee of authenticity.
