200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Copper-Nickel Coin
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first journey of the Locomotion No. 1 steam locomotive, The Royal Mint presents the exceptional 200 Years of the Modern Railway £2 Proof Coin, commemorating the dawn of the transportation revolution. On 27th September 1825, on the tracks between Shildon and Stockton in Northern England, the Locomotion No. 1, driven by engineer George Stephenson, transported 600 passengers and 36 wagons. This event, considered the world’s first public steam-powered passenger transport, opened a new chapter in the history of transportation. This coin is part of the "Railway 200" celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of modern railways, which have become integral to the development of societies, economies, and cultures worldwide. It is struck from two metals: aluminium and copper, and weighs a total of 12g. Obverse of the coin features an effigy of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, designed by Martin Jennings, alongside the coin’s denomination and year of issue – 2025. The image of the King on the obverse pays tribute to the current British monarch. Reverse of the coin depicts the Locomotion No. 1 steam engine, symbolizing the start of the modern railway era. The coin’s edge is inscribed with the words “ACTIVE LOCOMOTION NO 1”, honoring this revolutionary machine. Each coin is carefully packaged in a stylish presentation box and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
