The US Mint opened in 1792 and its first director was the renowned scientist David Rittenhouse (1792-1795). The mint was established as a response to the unstable monetary rates occurring at the time-people realised the importance of stability in circulation. Today, the mint is one of the most prestigious mints in the world. In recent times, production has fluctuated between 4 and 10 billion coins per year, making the American Eagle coins already known all over the world. The United States Mint operates in six cities across the country: the headquarters is in Washington, D.C., the treasury in Fort Knox, and production centres in Philadelphia, West Point, Denver and San Francisco.

The obverse of the coin was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the coins minted between 1907 and 1933. It depicts the personification of Liberty, symbol of the United States and liberation, walking with the attributes of peace: an olive branch and a torch. The seat of the US Congress can be seen at her feet, with the sun's rays in the background. The obverse features the maxim that was included in the Declaration of Independence - "In God We Trust"The obverse of the bar features an eagle flying over the mountains, with the flag of the United States of America in the background. Also stamped is the inscription "30th anniversary of the silver American Eagle" (30th anniversary of the American Eagle coin).The reverse of the coin is decorated by an eagle (designed by John Mercanti) holding a ribbon with the maxim "E pluribus unum" (Latin: Out of many one), referring to the unification of the states. Above the eagle are thirteen five-pointed stars, symbolising the thirteen colonies.On the reverse of the bar, the Capitol has been minted, as well as the dates 1986- 2016 and, depicting the minting years of the coin, the number 30, which is decorated with the United States flag.
