Polish Painters of the 19th/20th Century – Leon Wyczółkowski 20 Zloty Silver 2007
The National Bank of Poland honoured one of the most prominent Polish artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries – Leon Wyczółkowski – with a silver commemorative coin with a face value of 20 zł. The coin was issued as part of the series “Polish Painters of the 19th/20th Century”, which promotes the legacy of artists who shaped modern Polish art.
Leon Wyczółkowski – master of light and colour
Leon Wyczółkowski (1852–1936) was a painter, graphic artist and draftsman associated with realism, impressionism and symbolism. His work featured landscapes, rural life scenes, still lifes and portraits. He was also a pioneer of colour lithography in Poland. His art was characterised by a delicate play of light and vibrant colours, making him one of the key figures of the Young Poland movement.
Reverse – the artist and his work
The reverse of the coin features a profile portrait of Leon Wyczółkowski based on his self-portrait. Beside the image is a fragment of the painting “Portrait of Maria Zaleska née Górska”, showcasing his mastery of light and texture. The composition highlights both his artistic legacy and his distinctive style rooted in natural observation and emotional depth.
Obverse – national and artistic symbolism
The obverse features the emblem of the Republic of Poland – the crowned eagle – along with the inscription “RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA 2007” and the denomination “20 ZŁ”. In the background, a stylised composition based on Wyczółkowski’s graphic works adds an artistic touch and directly references his technique.
