The history of the Polish monetary system, as it relates to today's Narodowy Bank Polski, dates back to the currency reform of 1924. As a result of the reform, the Polish mark was replaced by the złoty, and Bank Polski was granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes.

Bank Polski officially began operating on April 28, 1924. The institution functioned as a private joint-stock company, and its independence was intended to support the stabilization of the Polish currency. The złoty's exchange rate was successfully stabilized in 1927, and this stability was maintained until the end of the interwar period.

Narodowy Bank Polski began operating in 1945. In its early period it drew on the experience and knowledge of prewar Bank Polski employees. As the Polish economy transformed, the role of NBP changed as well.

Significant reforms were carried out in the late 1980s. In 1997 the Monetary Policy Council was established, one of whose most important tasks is to conduct monetary policy in order to maintain price stability.

Significant changes did not come until the late 1980s. This was a period of numerous reforms that restored the złoty's function as the national currency, with NBP entrusted with responsibility for maintaining its value. In 1997 the Monetary Policy Council was established, along with the Commission for Banking Supervision and the General Inspectorate of Banking Supervision – all in order to properly safeguard the national currency and the stability of the financial system.
