Historia de la United States Mint

The United States Mint was officially established on April 2, 1792, under the Coinage Act. The first mint was built in Philadelphia, which was then the capital of the United States. It was the first federal building established under the Constitution of the United States.

At first, Philadelphia produced coins made of copper, silver and gold. As the United States expanded and new gold discoveries were made, production capacity had to increase. In 1835, branch mints were established in Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans.

In the following decades, the United States Mint opened additional facilities, including in San Francisco and Denver. Today it operates production facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point, as well as the bullion depository at Fort Knox.

The United States Mint produces a wide range of precious-metal coins. American Eagle coins are particularly popular and are available in gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

The gold American Eagle is made from 91.67% fine gold, while the silver American Eagle contains 99.9% fine silver. The coins are legal tender in the United States and are guaranteed by the US government for their weight and purity.

The United States Mint also offers the American Buffalo, a gold coin made from 99.99% pure gold. Its design refers to the classic American Buffalo Nickel coin from 1913.

The first Philadelphia mint building opened as early as 1792. At first, people, horses and oxen powered coin production. In 1836, a steam press was introduced, significantly increasing production efficiency.

The scale of the United States Mint's operations is enormous. The mint produces billions of circulating coins every year, which enter circulation throughout the United States.

Facilities at different locations specialise in different types of production. Philadelphia and Denver focus mainly on circulating coins, while West Point is an important centre for producing precious-metal investment and collector coins.

The best-known series is American Eagle. Gold and silver coins from this series are among the most popular bullion coins in the world. The gold American Eagle shows Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse.

The American Buffalo is also very popular: a one-ounce gold coin made from 99.99% fine gold. Its distinctive buffalo design has made it one of the best-known American investment coins.
