The mint was established on 20 June 1899, during the heyday of the gold boom in Western Australia. Through the process of refining gold and minting 106 million sovereigns over the next three decades, it contributed significantly to the rapid economic development of this region of Australia. Since that landmark moment, the Australian Kangaroo, formerly known as the Australian Nugget, has achieved worldwide recognition and success. Underlining the investment value of the gold bullion is the fact that it is guaranteed by the Australian Government and is fully legal tender in the issuer's country. Furthermore, it has the added security of an engraved 'P' on the reverse side.

Rewers show a kangaroo, koala and kookaburra, among acacias - Australia's national floral emblem. The coin bears the inscription '1899 THE PERTH MINT 2024', as well as information on weight, year of issue and bullion proof. The reverse was designed by Jennifer McKenna.
