Walter Otto is responsible for the design of the maple leaf, which has not changed over the years.
The obverse bears the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination and the date of issue. As of 2015, additional security features include radial lines in the background of the coin.
The reverse of the coin depicts the maple leaf, which is Canada's national symbol, as well as the mintage (Au .9999) and the name of the country (Canada) in which the coin is produced. The coin's design was developed by Walter Otto.
