The Romans made Britannia the symbol of Great Britain, and it first appeared on coins around the year 119 AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Disappearing after the fall of the Roman Empire, the figure returned during the Elizabethan era and began to symbolize Britain's maritime power.
The coins are struck from Au.9999 fine gold, in proof standard. The set includes denominations of £100, £50, £25, £10, £1, and 50p. The coins have the following weights and diameters: 1 oz (32.69 mm), 1/2 oz (27.00 mm), 1/4 oz (22.00 mm), 1/10 oz (16.50 mm), 1/20 oz (12.00 mm), and 1/40 oz (8 mm).

The figure of Britannia, holding a trident and looking proudly into the observer's eyes, stands above the turbulent waves leading toward the rays of the rising sun. Additionally, the reverse includes information about the weight, gold purity, year of issue, and the inscription "BRITANNIA".
