The American Eagle is a gold coin minted from 22-karat gold. It is heavier than other gold coins because it is made with the addition of copper, which enhances the strength of the coin and makes it much more durable and resistant to mechanical damage than products minted in pure gold. Despite the copper admixture, this coin contains 1 Ounce of pure bullion (minted in Au .916). It is produced at the United States Mint. It was first minted in 1986. It is interesting to note that the image of the goddess on the obverse has not changed since the beginning of minting. It is also worth mentioning that the obverse and reverse are reversed 180 degrees to each other, which undoubtedly makes it unique, as it is the only coin in the world minted with the reverse stamp. All production is done by hand. The coins are placed in a press containing special pigments. The effect of the design floating above the mirror-like surface is achieved by multiple stamping. The US Mint opened in 1792 and its first director was the renowned scientist David Rittenhouse (1792-1795). The Mint was established as a response to the unstable monetary rates occurring at the time - people realised the importance of stability in circulation. Today, the mint is one of the most prestigious in the world. In recent times, production has fluctuated between 4 and 10 billion coins per year, making the American Eagle coins already known all over the world. The United States Mint operates in six cities across the country: the headquarters is in Washington DC, the treasury is in Fort Knox, and production centres are in Philadelphia, West Point, Denver and San Francisco. The obverse was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for coins minted between 1907 and 1933, and depicts the personification of Liberty, symbol of the United States and liberation, walking with the attributes of peace: an olive branch and a torch. The seat of the US Congress can be seen at her feet, with the sun's rays in the background. On the reverse of the American Eagle, we see an image of a bird landing in a nest, designed by American sculptor Miley Tucker-Frost. The reverse also features the American maxim of the Declaration of Independence: "In God We Trust" and "E pluribus unum" (Out of many one).
